EU: new car registrations fell 1.4% in January

New car registrations in the European Union in January stood at 1,041,650 vehicles, down 1.4% from the same period in 2010, according to statistics of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

Last month, the most significant decline was registered in Greece (-63.3%), Spain (-23.5%) and Italy (-20.7%), while the car market in France and Germany was a sales growth of 8.2%, respectively, 16.5% in January.

New car registrations have been the greatest advance in Latvia with 126.4%, 118.2% in Estonia and Lithuania by 92.7%.

Fiat, Toyota and Ford brands were the most affected by the decline in European automotive markets, the tenth consecutive month of declining sales in the same period a year earlier. Fiat sales fell 20% last month, the decline was 11% Toyota and Ford fell 9.4%.

Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker, has benefited from the revitalization of sales in Germany, Europe's largest market. Volkswagen sales rose 6% to 227,212 vehicles, while its market share rose to 22.1% from 20.6%.
