European car manufacturers are affected by the crisis in parts of Japan

According to estimates of several analysts, European car manufacturers could lose up to 2.4 billion in profits this year if supply difficulties persist in parts of Japan. Fiat and PSA groups are worst affected.

Some companies in Europe have already begun to decrease production with Japanese component manufacturers worsening problems after the disaster caused by the largest earthquake in the history of the country, Mediafax.

European car manufacturers are supplying electronic auto parts, semiconductors, and some mechanical components such as gearboxes, in Japan, and return to normal production in Japan could take several months, analysts consider.

According to Commerzbank estimates, the total halting of production of components a month in Japan, but considered unlikely, could cause decrease of 2.4 billion euros before tax profit estimate for this year.

Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroen Group would be most seriously affected, since they are less profitable than the German car manufacturers.
