GM defends Volt, while critics say it is not a true electric car
General Motors gets in these days of harsh criticism from the media, which accuse the Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle, as claimed, but a rechargeable hybrid, and Toyota Prius. GM provides further explanations.
Critics from publications Edmunds.com, Motor Trend and Popular Mechanics said that following a test drive the new Chevrolet Volt conducted during strong acceleration, the Volt uses the gasoline engine to power an electric generator, which in turn rotates wheels, just like hybrid vehicles.
General Motors says on its website that the Volt is an extended-range electric vehicle, not a hybrid Toyota Prius as an example. Hence the reaction of journalists who feel that somehow lie told at the beginning of actual operating principle of the new Chevrolet Volt.
After titles like "Lied GM: Chevy Volt is not a true EV (GM lied: Volt is not a true electric car), the American company to appear saying that he never said that the Volt is an electric car 100% (the EV true ") but could not give many details because it was not yet completed the registration operation of several patents for inventions.
This illustrates the debate on the challenge of marketing the Volt's car manufacturers to sell new technologies in cars that do not have a standard classification and whose performance is difficult to measure. Remember the consumption given by General Motors for Chevrolet Volt: 230 mpg (about 1 litru/100 km).
GM has promoted the new Volt costing U.S. $ 41,000 as an electric vehicle to receive an input image in front of vehicles to Toyota Prius hybrid.
For three years, GM says Volt electricity kept going, while gasoline engine is used only as a power generator, battery loading. Nick Richards, a spokesman for GM said the Volt will only work with electricity and has no mechanical link from the gasoline engine to the wheels.
Tony Posawatz, Volt product manager said in an interview that the gasoline engine does not propel the wheels directly. "Whatever people say it is a smart solution. Works very different from a hybrid.
Most likely, however, customers will not take much account that is a hybrid or electric car. Potential buyers will be more interested in car prices, fuel economy and how many km they can go with it to recharge.
