GM Prepares Detroit Plant For 2012 Volt And Opel Amps

Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant of General Motors, which builds the Chevrolet Volt, will close for four weeks, starting June for improvements to increase production of the Volt and ampere.

Already in great demand, the number of models extended-range electric Chevrolet Volt will again be restricted for a period of three months before restarting production when Amper Volt and Opel will begin to be exported to Europe and China.

"The Volt will be available to all customers in the United States by the end of 2011," said Cristi Landy, director of marketing for Chevrolet Volt. "By stopping the factory for reconfiguration will be able to cope better with customer demand."

The Chevrolet Volt was launched in 2011 in California, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia and Washington, DC Volt will be available throughout America and Europe, China and Canada until the end of this year.

Following the upgrade the plant, production capacity planned for the Volt and amps this year will increase to 16,000 units, including exports and fleets of several hundred U.S. Car dealers sent demo. In 2012, global production capacity is expected to be 60,000 units and a total of approximately 45,000 units to be delivered to the U.S. market.

During the four weeks the plant will be closed will be installed in new machinery, equipment and systems. Thus, the plant will be ready for the 2012 Opel Volt amps, and next year for the Chevrolet Malibu.
