Mitsubishi Motors begins production of electric cars for Europe

Mitsubishi announced today the start of the production version of the European i-MiEV electric model, electric models with Peugeot and Citroen C-ZERO iOn of PSA Peugeot Citroen factory in Mizushima, Japan.

Japanese version (with the steering wheel on the right) is produced and sold since last year. In fiscal 2010 (April 2010 - March, 2011) Mitsubishi Motors Company (MMC) aims to sell 5,000 i-MiEV units, including models built for PSA.

At the ceremony at the Mizushima factory, MMC president, Osamu Masuko said: "There have been 100 years since it began mass production of cars with internal combustion engine. I took the first steps for the next 100 years of industry, and -MiEV. Today, by starting production for the European market do the second step in the development worldwide of electric vehicle industry. This is an important step for the automotive industry and at the same time signifies the beginning of e-mobility Europe.

MMC intends to sell the i-MiEV in 14 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom) in December, since then Fiscal 2011 and gradually expand to other countries. In Romania will be available from spring 2011.

Compared with the Japanese version, European version of the i-MiEV has been modified to better meet European regulations and include redesigned front and rear bumpers, adding safety systems such as Active Stability Control ( AUC), a new selector gearbox, a new dashboard for the left-hand drive versions, etc.. The European version of the i-MiEV has a range of 150 km on a single battery charge.
