Official: Renault Nissan and DaimlerChrysler announced a strategic partnership

Renault, its Japanese partner Nissan and German auto group Daimler, maker of Mercedes-Benz, have formalized today proposed alliance, which provides equity exchange and joint development of new cars.

Under this alliance, Daimler will take a 3.1 percent stake in Nissan and a 3.1 percent stake in Renault. Instead, Renault and Nissan would each take a stake of 1.55 percent of Daimler's capital. Alliance in particular to joint development and sharing of diesel and petrol, and cooperation in the electric car.

The three car manufacturers have announced that they will cooperate for the new generation smart fortwo and Renault Twingo models, including their electric versions, and to expand family and Twingo models of smart range.

Successor of the smart fortwo, smart new four-seater (smart forfour the back!) And the new generation Renault Twingo will be built on the same architecture, developed jointly by DaimlerChrysler and Nissan. Vehicles will be of course different from each other in terms of design, but their main characteristic common to the concept of traction on the rear axle, used smart cars now. Launch of new vehicles is planned for 2013.

As for the engines, the new tri-alliance will work together on future development projects implemented in passenger and light commercial vehicles, in particular:

- Co-development of diesel and petrol Renault-Nissan Alliance, they will be the new Renault Twingo and smart and will be adapted and modified with features for the new generation Mercedes-Benz compact car;

- Experience in large propellers Daimler petrol and diesel will be introduced and the range of Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan, while providing new opportunities for future collaboration;

- Renault-Nissan Alliance will share its experience with regard to diesel engines and transmissions for Mercedes-Benz Vito.
