Opel new city will compete with Fiat 500

Opel's new minicar will be a direct competitor to Fiat 500, said Alain Visser, Opel's director of sales and marketing. Codename "Junior", the new Opel will go into production in 2013 and will have an electric version.

German manufacturer plans to launch a new model to rival mini-class models like the Ford Ka, Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Lupo future. But while most models in its class to have a low price, Opel has a different strategy for his model, code-named Junior.

Visser said that Opel's minicar will be an "iPod on wheels", with a number of modern technologies, and attract young people. "If they could be compared with another car, Fiat 500 would be," Visser told Automotive News Europe in an interview at the Paris Motor Show (2-17 October 2010).

The main markets for the new model from Opel small class will be Germany and Britain. The official said that Opel has not taken a final decision on the name.

Nick Reilly, chief executive said that Opel has two strategies for mini vehicle segment. Little Meriva minivan will continue to attract young families, while the new "Junior" will be the target young people do not associate their social status, size of car. An electric-powered version will be launched soon after the conventional model, Reilly said.

Junior will be produced in 2013 at the Opel plant in Germany, along with the three-door Corsa.

Opel presented in Geneva in 2004 Trixx concept (pictured), a vehicle with three seats, by 3.04 meters long, which until now has not reached production, but could provide the first clues on the new Opel Junior ....
