Smart ForTwo ED will be launched in series production in 2010

Daimler Smart ForTwo will start construction of model electrical factory in Hambach French. The first phase will build 1,000 units in November 2009, and from 2010 to launch mass production.
Daimler announced today that it has selected the Smart factory in Hambach, France, the location where it will build the model Smart ForTwo ED (electric drive). Since 2012 the new electric vehicle equipped with the latest technology of lithium batteries will leave the assembly line entering the Smart dealer network.
Daimler will invest tens of millions of euros in its factory in Hambach to make it suitable building electric cars. French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the French government will support this project through the PAT (Prime d'aménagement du Territoire). A further support comes from the Lorraine Region and the Département of Moselle. Such aid will mean a total of 15 percent of total investment.
In November 2009 the factory will begin production of a small series of electric Smart 1000 units. As a first step these vehicles will be offered a selected range of customers in Europe and the U.S., which will provide feedback after testing machine. Since 2010, the electric Smart ForTwo model will start to be built at large scale.
Smart brand in 2007 assumed the role of pioneer in electric propulsion systems for vehicles. When the models were tested 100 first-generation Smart Electric London's streets proved to be effective and practical. Following feedback provided in this experiment was very positive and the basis for improving the current model of electric smart fortwo. Just one year later, the company introduced the second generation of electric vehicle technology and more advanced lithium-ion batteries best.
