The Renault-Nissan will build a factory for Li-ion batteries in Portugal
Prime Minister of Portugal, Jose Socrates, and director of the Renault-Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, announced today the construction of production facilities of batteries for electric cars scheduled to be launched in 2011.
The new factory, which produces Li-ion batteries will be built industrial complex Renault CACIO (Aveirense Companhia de Componentes para a Indústria Automóvel) in Aveiro, with 250 km north of the capital Lisbon.
In July, Nissan has confirmed its intentions to invest in production of batteries for electric vehicles to be produced by Renault-Nissan. Plant construction will begin in 2010 and production of batteries in 2012 at a yearly pace of 50,000 units.
With an understanding with Government of Portugal, Nissan will invest over 160 million euros in the new facility, directly creating 200 new jobs.
The Renault-Nissan - the third group in the world by sales volume - has pledged to become a leader in mobility with zero pollutant emissions. From Nissan Leaf, which will reach the market in late 2010, the Alliance has proposed to produce electric vehicles under seven brands Renault, Nissan and Infiniti. In addition to location in Portugal, Renault-Nissan Alliance has confirmed that will produce batteries in France, Japan, the United States and Britain.
